Why “Burn A Qur’an Day” Controversy Shows That We Need More Such Events

It is in some respects astonishing how something as trivial as a minister of a small, obscure church deciding to burn a few Korans has gained so much media and political attention. It seems that everyone from the Pope to General Petraeus to politicians on the left, like Hilary Clinton, and on the right, like Mayor Bloomberg, have made statements about the upcoming event. And, even more amazing, they are all condemning it. It is not often that you will see so many people from so many ends of the spectrum coming together to condemn an event. But, in that very condemnation we see the need for this and other similar events.

Why are these people condemning the Koran burning? Is it because they are against book burning in general? Maybe, but not likely. Is it because they feel some sort of reverence for the Koran? Hopefully no. It is because they know full well that the Muslims, those people who practice what many politicians from Barack Obama to George Bush to Tony Blair insist on  calling the “religion of peace” will follow the example of their prophet Mohammad and go on a rampage to rape, riot, pillage, destroy, burn, and behead!

And that pretty much says everything that anyone really needs to know about the two-faced nature of these politicians and “leaders” and the “religion of peace”. If some obscure mullah had announced that he was going to burn a few Bibles, it would not even make it to the blogosphere, let alone the major news outlets. And, we all know this. We all know that if a mullah was to burn a few Bibles, Christians the world over would not go on a rampage to rape, riot, pillage, destroy, burn, and behead. Partially because that was not the message taught by Jesus, but also because most Christians have gotten over their literal interpretation of the Bible and joined the 21st century. Sure, there are exceptions, and there are certainly many Christians who claim that Jesus actually was born of a virgin and arose from the dead. But, I suspect that many only give that lip service, so as to “fit in”. A very significant proportion of Muslims, on the other hand, still really believe that the Koran is actually the exact words of Allah as spoken to Mohammad by the angel Gabriel. They don’t realize that it is just a book, written by humans, based on verbal tales that were passed on after the death of Mohammad. They actually believe that Mohammad was the  “Perfect Man”, al-insan al-kamil, and the “Model of Conduct”, uswa hasana. Thus, since Mohammad married a 6 year old girl, and consummated the marrigae when she was 9 and he was 54, modern Muslims believe they should do the same, and they do. In fact, the leader of the Islamic revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, followed the lead of the prophet.

The Ayatollah Khomeini himself married a ten-year-old girl when he was twenty-eight. Khomeini called marriage to a prepubescent girl “a divine blessing,” and advised the faithful: “Do your best to ensure that your daughters do not see their first blood in your house.”

And, this is not by any means an isolated occurrence in “modern day” Islamic nations. As related on page 188 of “Religion of Peace?: why Christianity is and Islam isn’t” by Robert Spencer, we find out the following shocking facts.

That is the attitude of the Islamic world. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reports that more than half the girls in Afghanistan and Bangladesh are married before they reach the age of eighteen. In early 2002, researchers in refugee camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan found half the girls married by age thirteen. In an Afghani refugee camp, more than two out of three second-grade girls were either married or engaged, and virtually all the girls who were beyond second grade were already married. One ten-year-old was engaged to a man of sixty. In early 2005 a Saudi man in his sixties drew international attention for marrying fifty-eight times; his most recent bride was a fourteen-year-old he married in the spring of 2004.

All of this comes directly from the barbaric seventh century teachings of the Koran. And, these would be bad enough, but Islam is not just a religion, like Christianity, Buddhism, Mormonism, and other modern religions; it is also a system of laws and government. Islam dictates virtually every aspect of a Muslim’s life from the moment they wake up to the moment they drift off to sleep. (Which, by the way, Islam dictates must be on the right side with the right hand under the cheek, as described in other parts of the excerpted article that follows.)

In fact, Islam goes so far as to even describe in detail how you are to go to the bathroom.

Bathroom Etiquette A. Mentioning Allah: One of the most important etiquettes to observe is to mention the name of the Lord before entering the place where one will relieve oneself, since the Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) has informed us that the place where people go to the bathroom is a place of devils, saying: “Verily, these places are occupied, so if one of you enters the bathroom, he should say: ‘O Allah, verily I seek refuge with you from the male and female devils’.” In both Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim, it is related from Anas that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) used to make that supplication before entering the bathroom.

Ibn Hajar comments: “He (Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) used to seek refuge as an act of worship. He did so out loud in order to teach others.”

This mention of Allah’s name – as we have already stated – leaves no room for the devils to gain power over man. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “A barrier is placed between the eyes of the jinn and the shameful parts of the human being when a person mentions Allah’s name before entering the bathroom.”

Imâm al-Nawawî says: “Our scholars say that it is preferable to recite this formula of remembrance whether one is inside a structure or out in the middle of the desert. Our scholars say that it is preferable to first say: ‘In the name of Allah’, then add: ‘O Allah, verily I seek refuge with you from the male and female devils’. After he leaves the bathroom, he should say: ‘I seek Your pardon’ then say: ‘Praise be to Allah who has allowed me to enjoy its good flavor, has retained within me its nourishment, and removed from me its harm’.”

B. Entering with the left foot and leaving with the right: This is based on what we have already established: that noble actions start with the right and ignoble actions start with the left.

C. Refraining from bringing into the bathroom any item with Allah’s name written on it: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) used to take off his ring that was embossed with “Muhammad, Messenger of Allah” before entering the bathroom.

D. Refraining from mentioning Allah’s name and speaking to others while in the bathroom: This is disliked from one who is reliving himself, whether he is in a structure or in the wilderness, except when there is a necessity.

E. Refraining from relieving oneself in places where people take shade, congregate, or frequently pass through: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Be wary of the three curses: passing excrement in places where people congregate, in the middle of the road, or in places of shade.”

In another narration it is given: “Be wary of two accursed ones.” The people asked him: “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “The one who relieves himself where people walk and the one who does so where people take shade.”

And, further.

F. Avoiding ones own urine and coming in contact with impurities: This is important, because the primary reason for punishment in the grave is from failing to avoid becoming soiled with one’s own urine. It is related by Abû Hurayrah that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Do not let your urine come in contact with you, because it is the primary reason for punishment in the grave.” Consequently, one should not urinate in the direction of the wind or on very hard ground where there is a chance of its spray returning back onto one’s clothing. Likewise, one must lift ones clothing out of the way to avoid it getting contaminated.

G. Refraining from using one’s right hand to clean oneself: In Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim, it is related from Abû Qatâdah that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “When one of you drinks, he should not breathe into the drinking vessel, and when one of you urinates, he should not hold his penis in his right hand, nor should he clean himself with his right hand.” This is in deference to the right hand that should be used for noble and clean acts like eating and drinking. As for the left hand, it is for ignoble actions like cleaning oneself and blowing one’s nose.

H. Refraining from facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer) or turning ones back to it: In Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim, it is related from Abû Ayyûb al-Ansârî that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When you go to relieve yourselves, do not face the Qiblah nor turn your back to it, but instead face another direction.” Abû Ayyûb continued: “When we came to Syria, we found that some of the bathrooms were built in the direction of the Ka`bah, so we did our best to turn from its direction and sought Allah’s forgiveness.”

I. Washing the hands with soap and water after leaving the bathroom: Jarîr b. `Abd Allah relates that he was with the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he went to relieve himself. He then asked me: “Jarîr, bring me some water.” I did so, and he cleaned himself. He then motioned with his hand and scrubbed it with earth.” Today, soap has replaced clean earth as a scrubbing substance and cleansing agent, because the purpose all along has been cleanliness and the removal of impurities. This is aptly fulfilled by soap. Using earth should not be forgotten however, since it can be resorted to whenever soap is unavailable.

It is the political aspect of Islam that makes it so dangerous. If it was just another wacky religion, we could let it go at that. But, most civilized religions do not have a political aspect that dictates taking over the world by force.  Islam insists that the only law that is acceptable is Sharia, and Sharia is a totalitarian, supremacist, misogynistic, barbarian, bloody, brutal ideology that insists on all people on the earth being controlled by Sharia, and that there can be no peace until all the world is under the “House of Islam”, Dar al-Islam. (Islam divides the world into sections;  Dar al-Islam is one, and Dar al-Harb, or “House of War” is the other.)

While one is hard pressed to find exhortations to kill, behead, rape, pillage, burn, and subjugate non-Christians in the New Testament of the Bible, the Koran, Sunnah, and hadith are replete with such teachings, as related in part below:

“Slay the unbelievers wherever you find them.” Koran 2:191
“Make war on the infidels living in your neighborhood.” Koran 9:123
“When opportunity arises, kill the infidels wherever you catch them.” Koran 9:5
“Any religion other than Islam is not acceptable.” Koran 3:85
“The Jews and the Christians are perverts; fight them.” Koran 9:30
“Maim and crucify the infidels if they criticize Islam” Koran 5:33
“The infidels are unclean; do not let them into a mosque.” Koran 9:28
“Punish the unbelievers with garments of fire, hooked iron rods, boiling water; melt their skin and bellies.” Koran 22:19
“Do not hanker for peace with the infidels; behead them when you catch them.” Koran 47:4
“The unbelievers are stupid; urge the Muslims to fight them.” Koran 8:65
“Muslims must not take the infidels as friends.” Koran 3:28
“Terrorize and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur’an.” Koran 8:12
“Muslims must muster all weapons to terrorize the infidels.” Koran 8:60

So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. Koran 9:5

O ye who believe! fight the unbelievers who gird you about, and let them find firmness in you: and know that Allah is with those who fear Him. 9:123

Again, if it was just a religion, we might not be too concerned. But, as I said, Muslims, even in the 21st century, actually believe this stuff. I don’t think that most Christians, today, really take most of the Bible and their religious teachings literally. After all, even Glenn Beck, a devout Mormon, reportedly wore a bullet-proof vest at his recent rally in Washington, D.C. While it was probably a good, sensible idea, it shows that even he does not put too much faith in the famous protective properties of a Mormon’s magic underwear. (Oh, you did not know about magic underwear?  Google it!)

We all know about how the Muslim barbarians rioted, burned, and killed because of a few cartoons. I have written about it before, here, here, and here. The fact that many “leaders” are urging the minister to cancel his Koran burning proves that the Muslims are winning the war of ideas. We don’t, in general, hear Muslims calling for Muslims to behave like civilized adults and laugh-off the childish book burning. (Although, Asra Q. Namani, did state that “We, as Muslims, need to tear a few pages out of the Quran.” Her full article, “Get Over the Quran Burning” is in the Daily Beast.)  We should be hearing leaders telling the Muslims to behave like civilized adults and laugh-off  the Koran burning. After all, it is they, the Muslims that riot, burn and kill, that are the guilty parties. They are the ones that must be punished for their barbaric behavior. To go after the book burner is to punish the messenger. The behavior by people like Mayor Bloomberg and others also shows a very dangerous double standard. By admitting that the minister has a constitutional right to burn a Koran but stating that he should not, while not stating that even though those who plan to build the triumphalist mosque at Ground Zero have a constitutional right to build it but should not, they are just appeasing the Muslims yet again. It is like our government insisting that guards at Guantanamo handle Korans with white gloves. That just encourages them to believe that they are right and we are wrong. It indicates to them that we hold deep respect for Islam and the Koran, while we should not. We need to discourage respect for Islam, at least in it’s political form. Again, if a person wants to bang their head on the ground and stick their asses in the air for Allah to have his way with them five times a day, that is their personal business, and they have a right to do it. But, as soon as they try to push Sharia law and Islamic governance on anyone, that is were we have to draw the line.

Personally, I think burning Korans is a silly thing to do, especially in a hot place like Florida. They already have enough heat. Better to use it for toilet paper.

  1. Jesus says:

It is no surprise to me that someone running a website called “how can people be so stupid” are themselves, so stupid. But please, by all means, don’t take what I say as literal. My statements are only a allegory for the complexities of the human condition coupled with the magnetic field of the 10th dimension and the side effects of the energy associated with Christ consciousness interacting with the nexus of the universe. Duuuhhhhhh.

It’s so sad to see that most of you people judge all Muslims by the actions of some… forgetting all the good deeds Muslims have done… Only because one person was a terrorist, it doesn’t mean that our holy Quran agrees with it, they are either misunderstanding the concept of peace in Islam, or they may pretend to be misunderstanding it so they can do their evil doings, Quran is against terrorizing and harming innocents, if you want, you could read an English translated copy of the Quran to see what it talks about, you could read about our prophet’s life and how benevolent he was.. then you can judge and say that Quran is wrong if you understood the whole thing from its roots before judging all Muslims by simply seeing that some of them terrorized and did wrong things, Muslims are giving America a massive amount of oil and gas, Muslims are welcoming christians in their countries and giving them many high positions, a school teacher in America can work as a university teacher in Doha, an ordinary employee in America can be a manager in Dubai, but a Muslim gets nothing in return, other than being humiliated and insulted in America for being a Muslim!! it’s a sad truth…
yes some Muslims are doing evil deeds, but many of them are good, pure hearted people…

I hope you read more about islam & the Prophet Mohammad’s life.

Instead of wasting your time in insulting Islam & Muslims, take time to learn & correct your thoughts.

How can people be so stupid? — the Answer is: by making websites like these, and being ignorant.. and yet pretend to know what they’re talking about.

P.S. You are harming only yourself.
